About 30 and 179 rural households and communities respectively are set to benefit from the national electricity grid
On the 16 September 2020 the Deputy Minister for energy Hon. Wureko Aido launched the savanna component of the electrification project at the savanna regional coordination council confess hall.
The entire electrifications project which is covering Northern, North East and the Savanna region will cost an amount of US$50 million. The project is expected to commence after the launch and is expected to span for a period of 24 month which is been funded by the Government of Ghana with Tropical cable and conductor limited as the main contractor and wilkins engineering limited as the sub-contractor , he entered that community members should not pay any money to contractors. He added that funding has been secured and has gone through parliament and all that is necessary for the project to start.
The breakdown of the beneficiary communities awarded under various packages for connection with electricity are; Central Gonja, East Gonja, West Gonja, North Gonja and Bole. Sawla Tuna – Kaliba will be included, in all 30 communities in the Savanna region are to benefit from the project.
He said as part of Government plans in supporting local firms, government has awarded the contract to a local company.
“Government in its efforts to proving support to Ghanaian local companies has signed a contract agreement with M/S Tropical Cable & Conductor Limited (TCCL) for the execution of this very electrification project. As part of the project implementation, locally manufactured electrical materials such as conductors, energy meters, transformers, wood poles etc., are expected to be sourced within Ghana”.
Hon. Wureko Aido stated that the project is not meant for politics or to win the elections in the upcoming December polls. “The project has nothing to do with the pending elections”
He continued by urging all communities that are going to benefit from this project to take advantage of the electricity so as to start a business, “I urge you to take advantage of the presence of the electricity to start business”
He added that with electricity community members will be able to meet the goals and objectives of the national electrification scheme (NES) by reducing poverty in the rural areas, increasing socio- economic development of the nation, creating jobs in rural areas, creating small to medium – scale industries in rural areas and many more.

“The Government recognizes that access to reliable and affordable energy service is crucial to the realization of its strategies for the accelerating growth and reducing poverty. The government of Ghana under the leadership of his Excellency the president, Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo- Addo’s vision seeks to provde reliable supply of energy in all its useable forms to all Ghanaians homes and businesses.
The ministry of energy is making effort to bring the access rate of 54.51% in the savanna region to be at par with the national average of 85.17%. In view of this number a number of electrification projects have been awarded under contract to connect some communities to the national electricity grid. Presently, there two different electrification project package being executed in the Northern region. This will increase to three after the launch of the new one.
The packages are the electrification works under the Hunan Construction Group Corporation and the ministry of Energy’s Self- Help Electrification project (SHEP- 4 and SHEP-5). The breakdown of the beneficiary communities awarded under various packages for connection with electricity are; Central Gonja with 47 communities, East Gonja with 42 communities, West Gonja 23 communities, North Gonja 54 communities and Bole the lowest with 13 communities. Sawla Tuna Kali will be included he said.179 communities in the savanna region are to benefit from the project.
