The Local Council of Churches in the West Gonja municipality of the Savannah region held peace walk and prayer on Saturday 5th December, 2020, as the nation draws closer to the December 7 polls on Monday.
The program brought together church members, some youth, pastors, Rev. Fathers, parliamentary candidates and others. The participants walked through the principal streets of Damongo holding placards with various inscriptions calling for peace before, during and after the elections, such as One Ghana, One Nation, One People, we have one Damongo, one Savannah region, among others.
The peace walk and prayer was organized with theme “I Speak for peace and I sing for peace”.
Speaking at the program, the chairperson of the Local Council of Churches in West Gonja municipality, Rev. Gilbert Agbefu said peace is the foundation of development, for without peace no development can take place. He advised the youth about the negative effects of conflicts or violence and admonished them not to allow any person(s) to use them cause trouble.
Rev. Agbefu appealed to the youth cast their votes in peace and refrain from violence during the elections.
He expressed gratitude to the three (3) parliamentary candidates for signing the peace agreement and called on the youth to emulate same by promoting peace amongst themselves.
The Jacksally Development Organization’s coordinated peace walk saw the NDC Parliamentary candidate, Adam Mutawakilu Garlus, NPP’s Samuel Abu Jinapor and the Independent candidate, David Tiki Dange all preaching and signing the peace agreement before the participants of the peace walk at the Damongo lorry station. This was done to show to the people of the area that the candidates stand for peace and won’t do anything negative to disrupt the peace we all enjoy. The signing of the peace agreement documents was administered by Rev. Dr. John Buabeng Odum.
The peace walk brought together the police personnel, security council, people from different religious backgrounds, youth from different political parties and other stakeholders.
Rev. Father Lazurus ( Rep of Damongo Bishop), PS. Samuel Dinkeri (Youth rep – Local Council of Churches), Yennu Isaac (Coordinator), the leader of Jacksally Development Organization, Mr. Seidu Jeremiah and staff all graced the program.
